Who We Are

The Purpose of Recovery (TPOR) is a peer-led nonprofit Recovery Community Organization (RCO) dedicated to supporting individuals and families affected by substance use and co-occurring mental health challenges. Rooted in lived experience, our team provides culturally responsive, non-clinical peer support for anyone seeking recovery.

What We do

We offer free, bilingual services that make recovery accessible, inclusive, and community-driven, including:
  • Peer Recovery Coaching (English & Spanish)
  • Support Groups & Workshops
  • Parent & Caregiver Support
  • Family Education & Resource Navigation
  • Sober Social Events & Community Gatherings

Our programs help rebuild trust, reduce isolation, and strengthen both individual and family systems—especially in communities impacted by intergenerational cycles of substance use.

Who We Serve

TPOR is committed to reaching and uplifting underserved populations, including:
  • Youth
  • Justice-involved individuals
  • Unhoused community members
  • Veterans
  • Families and caregivers
  • Anyone seeking support at any stage of recovery

We ensure accessibility through bilingual services and culturally informed practices delivered by certified Peer Support Specialists and Community Health Workers.

Our Approach & Vision

We believe recovery is more than abstinence—it is connection, purpose, and self-defined growth. We support individuals in discovering identity and meaning through community engagement, volunteering, creative expression, leadership opportunities, and personal goal-setting.

As TPOR grows, we are strengthening our internal infrastructure to sustain and scale our impact by:
  • Expanding staff and leadership capacity
  • Diversifying funding through grants and partnerships
  • Enhancing data tracking and evaluation
  • Deepening collaboration with behavioral health, housing, education, and justice systems

Our vision is a welcoming, empowering community where people in recovery—and their families—can heal, thrive, and build long-term stability together.

Our Vision

We envision a world
where individuals find
purpose to sustain
their long-term recovery.

Our Mission

We are committed to building and
sustaining a robust peer community for
individuals in recovery and their families
by providing practical support and
access to resources.

Our Values

  • We Are Inclusive: We believe all pathways to long-term recovery are valid, we augment rather than replace treatment and recovery modalities and programs
  • We Restore Hope: We demonstrate that recovery is real and possible; people can overcome and have fulfilling, purposeful lives
  • We Are Strengths-Based: We leverage each person’s natural capabilities when helping them create their own long term recovery plan
  • We Are Person-Centered: We focus on the human first rather than their challenges, promoting mutual respect and destigmatizing language
  • We Promote Safety: We strive to create an environment & community of physical and mental safety
  • We Support Empowerment: We believe in self-direction, providing a framework and support for individuals to take ownership of their choices and lives in recovery
  • We Collaborate Wholeheartedly: Our effectiveness depends on being part of a connected and thriving ecosystem of support services in our community
  • We Seek to Understand: By listening to people instead of making assumptions, we cultivate cultural humility
  • We Focus on Wholeness: Our holistic approach to wellbeing includes physical, emotional, relational, financial, legal, and other aspects of life that need to be restored
  • We Are Trauma-informed: We seek to know and understand the root causes of substance use to provide more effective support and authentic connection
  • We Practice Ethics and Transparency: We believe in the importance of shared responsibility and honest, timely communication
  • We Are Committed to Building Recovery Capital: We strive to continually improve and expand services available to recovering individuals and their families
